Virginia Marie Seguin

Virginia Seguin passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30th at the age of 103 (and a half!). Born January 14th, 1923 to Patrick and Bertha (Grenier) LaChance. She attended St Anne’s school, graduating as Co-Valedictorian in 1940. In 1943 she traveled alone by train to California to marry her childhood sweetheart, Wilfred (Bill) Seguin who was serving in the Army. They wed on April 19th and enjoyed 61 wonderful years together before his passing in 2004.

Her work life began at the Greenbush Golf Club, then she travelled to Detroit for a Civil Service job in the ‘big city’. This helped her gain employment at Stanford University after travelling to California to get married. After years as a stay-at-home mom, she once again embarked on series of jobs including JC Penny, Alpena General Hospital and finally at the Huron Cement Plant from which she retired. Her interests included tennis, bowling, golf, and playing cards. A lifelong member of St. Annes Catholic Church, she was a member of the Ladies Sodality and sang in the church choir for many years. Family and Friends were ever present in her life. She and Bill were able to enjoy several winters in Florida with their grade school friends the Sabourin’s, bi-weekly card parties with Bill’s brothers and their wives (or her cousin Marie and husband Bill Hoff), and after so many passed on she made new friends. She travelled to Europe at the age of 82 with good neighbor and walking partner Barb Aguis and shortly thereafter was able to purchase a vacation home in Fort Myers Beach where she spent several wonderful winter seasons with her sister Audrey. Her membership in the Association of Lifelong Learners (ALL) was another example of her desire to live out every day she was given. In her final years, she resided at Besser Senior Living and impressed both staff and residents with her humor and sunny outlook on life.

Virginia is survived by her 7 children Bill (Norine) of Stratford, New Jersey, Jeannie Thompson of Waters, Mi, Patricia Grochowski (Rich Kotovich) of Alpena, Jim (Sharon) of Hillman, Mike (Kathy) of Alpena, Frances McMullen of Midland, MI, and Mark (Robin) of Lakewood, Colorado. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred, grandchildren William Seguin, Esabella Grochowski and Jerald Grochowski, Her sisters Viola Davison, Patsy LaChance, Audrey Stevens, and sons-in-law Gary Werda, Gary Grochowski, Tom McMullen and Richard Grochowski.

She will be remembered with visitation at the A.E. Ross Funeral Home in Alpena from 4 to 8 PM (Rosary 6:30, Prayer Service 7) on Wednesday, August 5th. Visitation will continue at St. Annes Catholic Church beginning at 10 AM up until a funeral mass at 11 AM on Thursday, the 6th. Memorials include All Saints Catholic School and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
