Marlene Kay Hawes, a shining beacon of love and kindness, passed away on October 26, 2025, at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. Born on November 27, 1953, in Mio, Michigan, she lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community. On August 10, 2017, Marlene married Kenneth Hawes in Harrisville, Michigan.
Marlene's professional journey as a Foster Parent Program Director for N.E.M.C.S.A., a role she embraced for over twenty years. Her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others showcased her nurturing spirit. She transitioned into the hospitality industry as the General Manager for Fletcher Motel, where she brought her warmth and dedication to her team and guests. Marlene concluded her career as the Director of Volunteer Services at Alpena General Hospital, where she also managed the gift shop, a position she held until her retirement in 2018. Her efforts in these roles reflected her unwavering devotion to helping others and making her community a better place.
Education was also an integral part of Marlene's life. After graduating from high school, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in business administration/management from Spring Arbor University and was actively working toward her master’s degree, a testament to her belief in lifelong learning and personal growth.
An enthusiastic member of her community, Marlene was a charter member of the Barton City Eagles Club and served as president of the Alcona Humane Society, strongly advocating for animal welfare. She passionately ran Precious Paws in Harrisville, MI, and was an important figure within the VFW Auxiliary in Barton City. Her dedication extended to the Ausable Valley Tractor and Engine Club and the Alcona Classic Tractor and Engine Club, where she took on the role of treasurer. Additionally, she volunteered for many years in the Alzheimer’s Walk in Alpena, advocating for those affected by the disease.
Marlene's warm heart reached far and wide, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of her loved ones. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ken Hawes, and her cherished children: Angelina Pear; Sean (Linda McNeill) Pear; Richard Hawes; and Kevin (Jill) Hawes. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Paula Rae Pear; Josephine Mullins; Scott Hawes; Brittany Hawes; Becca Hawes; and Janie Hawes, along with her great-grandchild, Brinlee Hawes. Marlene also leaves behind her brother, Mark Burger.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Jeanette (Tuttle) Burger, who instilled in her the values of compassion and generosity that she carried throughout her life.
Marlene Kay Hawes will be remembered as a kind, caring, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her, and she will be dearly missed. As we celebrate her life, we hold onto the lessons she taught us: the importance of kindness, the strength of community, and the enduring bonds of family.
Marlene has been taken for cremation from A.E. Ross Funeral Home with no services planned at this time.
