Lawrence Arnold Thomas Sr., affectionately known as Larry, was born on August 10, 1941, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On August 17, 2024, Larry departed this world peacefully at the Encompassing Care AFC Home in Ossineke, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and love.
For many years, Larry dedicated himself to his career as a diesel mechanic, demonstrating his skills at various places, including Thompson Sales and Service. His hands were always busy as he worked diligently, embodying a spirit of perseverance and reliability that touched the lives of many. In addition to his professional life, Larry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, an experience that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and dedication.
Larry was a kind, caring, and hardworking individual. His greatest joy came from being a father and grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his family. He shared a deep bond with his sons, Larry Thomas Jr. and Leonard Thomas, and took immense pride in his four grandchildren—Dustin, Amber, Kaden, and Kalen—authoring countless memories together. Larry was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Sonny and George Taylor, who filled his heart with even more joy.
Throughout his life, Larry cultivated a passion for the great outdoors. He loved fishing and hunting, adventures that brought him closer to nature and provided cherished moments with loved ones. His fascination with RC planes was a testament to his playful spirit and love for exploration. But above all, he treasured the time spent with his beloved wife, Marilyn, with whom he shared nearly 60 beautiful years of marriage until she preceded him in death in 2023. Their partnership was a shining example of devotion and love that will forever be remembered.
Larry is preceded in death by his loving wife Marilyn, their son Lee Andrew Thomas, and his sister Judy Howell. Although these losses leave a void in the hearts of those he touched, Larry's spirit will continue to resonate through the many lives he impacted.
His family invites friends and loved ones to join them in honoring Larry's remarkable life. A memorial gathering will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at A.E. Ross Funeral Home in Alpena, MI, followed by Military Honors accorded by the U.S. Air Force and VFW Post 2496 at Evergreen Cemetery starting at 3:15 PM. During these gatherings, reflections of his kindness, laughter, and unwavering love will undoubtedly fill the air, echoing the profound legacy he leaves behind.
Larry Thomas’s life was one of meaning and purpose, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. In our hearts, he will forever remain a gentle spirit with a caring soul, a loving father and grandfather, and a steadfast friend.
