HOOS, Sr. John Francis, age 88, of Ossineke, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, surrounded by his devoted and loving family, and Hospice Care in Cocoa, Florida. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 5, 1936 to John Hoos and Marie Wilkins. John graduated from Edwin C. Denby High School, Detroit, Michigan in 1954. After graduation John was drafted for the Korean War. John served four years with the U.S. Army and the 82nd Airborne Division. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the U.S. Army and as a parachutist never left him, as friends and family will attest.
After his discharge from the Military, he played semi-pro baseball in Detroit for Alytaus Club. John’s team is honored by induction into the National Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame in Evansville, Indiana for winning the 1961 Championship in Youngstown, Ohio. John had the honor of playing baseball with Arthur LaPointe and that’s how the heartfelt relationship started with his future wife JoAnn Mary LaPointe. On November 4, 1961, John & JoAnn were married at St. John the Baptist Church, in Dearborn, Michigan, they shared and celebrated life together for over 62 years.
John was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn M. Hoos; daughter Elizabeth M. Hoos; an infant daughter, Catherine A. Hoos; stepmother Ruth T. Hoos; brother Robert M. Hoos; and John cherished his grandparents Francis & Helen Wilkins and George & Elizabeth Kovach for their devotion and guidance in raising him.
His life was full of love from and for friends and family. John is survived by his children, Teresa Hoos, Dwayne & Marianne (Hoos) Machinski, John Hoos, Jr. and Matthew & Lisa Hoos; a loving grandfather to 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; a sister Audrey Hoos; and his brother-in-law Michael & Gail LaPointe. John was a great uncle to his five nieces and one nephew, and cherished all his extended family and friends.
John dedicated many years to a career in the new housing construction as a licensed plumber, he retired in 1995 from the Plumbers Local 98, Detroit, Michigan. After retirement he enjoyed being active with his family and the community in various sports, hunting, and fishing.
Please help us celebrate John’s life on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hubbard Lake, Michigan. A call for prayer at 11:30 am by Pastor Joseph Llewellyn. Following the prayer a funeral procession, graveside ceremony/service, and military honors at Wolf Creek Lutheran Cemetery in Herron, Michigan. Luncheon following at the Aplex Center in Alpena, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the VFW Post 2496, Alpena, Michigan or St. Paul Lutheran Church (Child Care Fund), Hubbard, Lake, Michigan.
