Geraldine J. Hunter, a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena. She was born on June 21, 1934, in Alpena, Michigan, to the late Ralph and Veronica (Sobieski) Powell, and she dedicated her life to creating a nurturing home for her family and her community.
Geraldine was a proud graduate of Catholic Central High School, achieving the distinction of valedictorian in 1952. Her commitment to her education and her faith set the foundation for the life she would build. On September 5, 1955, she married the love of her life, Alex P. Hunter, at St. Mary Catholic Church, under the guidance of Monsignor Gatzke. Together, they built a loving home that was centered around faith, compassion, and family values.
Throughout her life, Geraldine co-owned and operated Karpus Hunter Funeral Home, where her dedication to service shone through. She was not only a devoted professional but also a dedicated homemaker, ensuring that her children and everyone who entered her home felt loved and cared for. Her passion for her family extended to her involvement in community service; she was a devout Catholic, actively participating in various church groups such as the Rosary Society and the Ladies Auxiliary. Geraldine was also a devoted Detroit Redwings Fan and could often be found supporting her team.
Geraldine’s spirit was especially vibrant during the Christmas season when she delighted in singing Polish Christmas carols at St. Mary's Church. This love for music was just one facet of her warm and generous nature. Her unconditional love and profound impact were felt by all who knew her, making her a cherished presence in their lives.
She is survived by her children, James Hunter, Daniel (Polly) Hunter, Steven (Laurie) Hunter, Peter (Krist) Hunter, and Alex M (Michelle Boilore) Hunter, all from Alpena. Geraldine was proud of her family legacy, which includes fifteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren, with one great-great-grandchild additionally bringing her great joy. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Powell, her sisters, Joan Hunter and Laurie Allen, and many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, especially as she was preceded in death by her husband, Alex P. Hunter, three grandsons—David Hunter, Randy Mousseau, and Blake Hunter a sister, Mary Lou VanDusen and daughter in law, Teresa Hunter. Geraldine was indeed a kind, caring, and loving woman, and her family and friends will sorely miss the warmth of her presence.
In celebration of her life, gatherings will be held at A.E. Ross Funeral Home on June 5, 2025, with visitation from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with prayer of the Rosary at 4:00 PM, and a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at St. Mary Catholic Church on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery at 12:15 PM. Geraldine J. Hunter's legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and friends, and her kindness and love will forever be remembered as guiding lights in their lives.
