Dorothy Elaine Kole

Dorothy Kole, age 94, of Alpena, passed away on June 4, 2022, at Medilodge of Alpena. She was born on March 29th, 1928 in Alpena to parents Michael and Rose Smigelski. She attended St Mary School and Alpena High School, graduating in 1946. Following graduation, she worked as a secretary for the Huron Portland Cement Company until her marriage in 1958 to Arthur Kole. She and her husband built a house at Long Lake where they both lived for nearly 60 years. She had three children, Frank Kole of Alpena, David Kole of Presque Isle, and Mark Kole of Kalamazoo. She is also survived by a sister, Mary (Roger) Reynolds. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Edward (Marie) and Phillip (Mary Lou), and a sister Alice (Raymond) Kaiser. Her husband also preceded her in death in December of 2020.
Dorothy enjoyed fishing with her husband, in particular ice fishing, well into her eighties. She also enjoyed playing cards, cooking, canning vegetables from the garden, doing crosswords, watching wildlife in the back yard, and every evening everything came to a halt when Wheel of Fortune came on TV. A devout Catholic, she took her family to church every Sunday. During the 1960s, she and her husband rented out the cottages on Long Lake that they owned. She became friends with many of these folks who would return each summer and continued to correspond with them for years later. She and her husband Arthur belonged to the Original Michigan Fiddlers Association and she enjoyed traveling around the state for the music jamborees.
Memorial visitation will take place at Karpus Hunter & Ross Funeral Home on Monday, June 27, 2022 from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service at 12:00 P.M. with Deacon Michael Roy officiating. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Dorothy’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Online condolences may be registered at www.karpushuntercares.com
